The Envisioning Development Toolkit
I’m going to NY in April for an Economics of Immigration course, and I’ve been tooling around with NYC geography to get a feel for the subject before we go there. This is an interactive map that displays family income distribution by neighborhood which is pretty nice if you’re in the data-nerd persuasion. It also has some really nice sliding tools for seeing who is and isn’t priced out of certain apartments. Anyways, as they’re the largest immigrating groups, were going to be focusing on Chinese, Dominican and Jamaican immigrants to the city. The first thing I noticed from this tool is that neighborhood-wise, both Wash. Heights and Chinatown/Lower East Side neighborhoods are at about 40% of median income. Comparatively, Jamaica and Queens Village come in at 70% and 95%, respectively.
